Acupuncture FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Not sure what acupuncture feels like? These FAQs answer common questions so you can arrive informed and at ease.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture is relatively painless when done by a licensed practitioner, in fact many patients find it very relaxing and would fall asleep during treatment.
I’m scared of needles, are there other options?
Yes! While acupuncture needles, which are thin and bendy like kitty whiskers, are unlike the other needles used in Western medicine, there are non-needle options.
We offer many other modalities:
- Cupping
- Gua sha
- Auriculotherapy
- Laser therapy
- Functional Medicine Consults
Does insurance typically cover acupuncture?
We do not bill insurance, we will gladly give you a custom coded receipt or superbill for your treatments so you can submit them to your insurance company for reimbursement.
You can use your flexible spending and health savings account debit cards for acupuncture!
How should I prepare for my acupuncture treatment?
It is recommended to eat a light meal prior to your treatment. Please wear loose-fitted comfortable clothing so that the practitioner would be able to access various acupuncture points on the body.
How long is an acupuncture session?
A follow up acupuncture session typically lasts about 20 to 30 minutes. If you’re a new patient, you can expect your first appointment to be between 45 to 60 minutes.
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
We generally recommend starting with a treatment plan of at least 5 sessions. While certain acute issues may improve more quickly, this initial series helps build momentum and jump-start your body’s healing process. For chronic conditions or pain that has persisted for months or years, more time is usually needed.
Most people notice improvement within 4–8 sessions. With stubborn conditions, you may first see changes in secondary areas—such as better sleep or increased energy—before your primary concern begins to shift. Lasting results require commitment, patience, and an active role in your healing journey.
How long will results last?
Individual responses will vary. Acupuncture works cumulatively, meaning results build over time. Some people feel improvement after just one session, while for others it takes several treatments. Early results may not last long, but with consistent care, the benefits typically extend and become more stable.
Each session helps retrain your body to function at its best. When combined with healthy diet and lifestyle choices, acupuncture not only relieves symptoms but also addresses the root cause—leading to long-term, lasting results.
How much will it cost?
Acupuncture sessions at Castle Rock Wellness typically range from $100-$125 depending on whether it’s your initial visit or a follow-up session. We also offer package discounts. At CRW we believe healthcare should be accessible to everyone. You may contact us to discuss an individualized financial plan to ensure your needs are met.
Can I exercise or go to work after treatment?
Yes. However, we recommend you not engage in any vigorous exercise immediately after treatment. You will feel your best if you rest and take it easy for a few hours.
You may return to work, but keep in mind you might feel a little sleepy or spacey for up to an hour after your treatment. Alternately, some people feel very energized and focused.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Yes! Acupuncture is a fantastic treatment option for many pregnancy-related concerns such as nausea, low back pain, headaches, insomnia or mood swings. Certain acupuncture points are avoided or used during different stages of pregnancy. Licensed acupuncturists know which points to use throughout your pregnancy to enhance your health and keep both mother and fetus safe.
I’ve heard of or experienced “dry needling”—how does it differ from acupuncture?
Dry needling is a term that allows healthcare professionals without an acupuncture license to perform needling techniques. In contrast, obtaining an acupuncture license requires extensive training—thousands of hours of education and rigorous board exams.
While physical therapists and chiropractors recognize the benefits of acupuncture, they are not fully trained in its practice. Instead, they may complete a brief workshop or seminar—sometimes as short as 24 hours—that qualifies them to offer “dry needling” within their scope of practice.
Should I tip?
Tipping is not expected or necessary. The cost of your treatment is inclusive.
